| He had to bike one hour each way to attend St. John’s University in another part of Shanghai. The students were mostly Chinese, but the courses were given in English. Joe also studied Chinese in another school. Despite this double load, he graduated from St. John’s at the age of 19. Here is his graduation picture. |
| After graduation, he covered war criminals, UNRRA activities, refugees and other stories as a reporter for the Shanghai Evening Post, which was then an English-language newspaper. |
